Stromausfall
Warum der Strom sooft ausfällt hat eine simple Ursache: Im November gab es Wahlen in Utah-Pradesh, dem Bundesstaat, in dem Varanasi liegt. Um die Wähler milde zu stimmen, wurde in dem Monat davor hier sehr viel Strom in Anspruch genommen, um praktisch 24 Stunden lang es der Bevölkerung zur Verfügung zu stellen. Da Elektrizität in Indien rationiert ist, muß nun, nachdem die Wahlen rum sind, der Verbrauch-Überschuss wieder gutgemacht, also eingespart werden. Für uns heißt das: Halb so viel Strom, wie sonst im Durchschnitt.
Deshalb gehört ein Satz Kerzen zu den "unverzichtbaren Dingen" in Indien, genauso wie ein Päckchen Streichhölzer und dem guten Gedächtnis, wo man diese das letzte Mal hingelegt hat.

To satisfy the voters, in the month before they gave them electricity nearly for 24 hours a day. But electricity is rationed in India, so now they have to reduce the power they take before. For us this means that we have now half as much electricity as an average otherwise. Therefore an extra set of candles belongs to "the most important things" in India.
